Public "Celebration of Life" : Monday, July 9, 4 pm at Garden Theatre.

Our hearts are with the Roper family as they deal with the passing of Mr. Bert Roper on July 4, 2012.  The 88 year old local legend, who, in addition to being a successful entrepreneur and business man and generous philanthropist, was a devoted father, grandfather, and husband to his wife Barbara for nearly 61 years.

Bert was a visionary who believed in working hard and letting nothing stand in the way of achieving your goals.  He played a pivotal role in the restoration of the Garden Theatre and the Winter Garden historic downtown.  Even when Winter Garden was a dilapidated ghost town, his dream was to see the city restored to its former glory; a time he fondly recalled from growing up in a small town, where everyone gathered on Saturday afternoons at the Garden Theatre to get the latest news and commune with friends and neighbors.

With his philanthropic wife Barbara, the Ropers donated time and money to the rebirth of the old movie house as a fully-functioning performing arts theatre.  In addition to the Garden Theatre, the Ropers have given generously to other worthy causes – namely the Roper YMCA and the Salvation Army.

Last fall, Bert was asked to speak at the TEDx Orlando event held at the Garden Theatre.  He also led the color parade, wearing a stovepipe hat and rainbow scarf, with his endearing smile and infectious spirit.
